How to Cook Mussels



It is simple to cook mussels by steaming. This article provides some information on how to choose, clean and steam the mussels.

Steps:

  1. Purchase mussels from a market you trust. You must only purchase live mussels; look for shells that are tightly closed. Discard any mussels that have opened upon taking them out at home.
  2. Rinse them with cold running water. Scrub the shells to remove any seaweed, dirt or other particles lodged on the shell.
  3. Pull out the stringy beard.
  4. Get a large stock pot add an inch of water, stock, wine or a combination of them. Also add aromatics such as garlic parsley. Whatever you prefer. The classic steamed mussels recipe consists of wine and aromatic seasonings.
  5. Add the mussels to the liquid and steam on a medium heat for 6-8 minutes until the majority of them has opened up.
  6. Strain and reserve the liquid. If any mussels do not open during cooking, discard them.

Tips:

  • Make a butter white wine and lemon sauce, pour that all over the mussels, perhaps sprinkle on some feta cheese, get a nice loaf of French bread for dipping and you will be in heaven.
